Virtualization Technology Glossary
This glossary covers the most common terms in virtualization debugging, sorted alphabetically.
AMD-V
AMD's hardware virtualization technology (also SVM), AMD's counterpart to Intel VT-x. Controls VM behavior via VMCB.
EPT (Extended Page Tables)
Intel's second-level address translation, mapping guest physical to host physical addresses. Core mechanism for VT Debugger memory hiding.
Intel VT-x
Intel's hardware virtualization technology providing VMX root and VMX non-root modes. Foundation of modern virtualization.
NPT (Nested Page Tables)
AMD's version of EPT with similar functionality, translating guest physical to host physical addresses.
VMCS
Virtual Machine Control Structure, a 4KB memory region storing VM state and control information in Intel VT-x.
VMCB
Virtual Machine Control Block, AMD-V's equivalent of VMCS.
VM-entry
The transition from VMX root to VMX non-root mode (entering the VM).
VM-exit
The transition from VMX non-root back to VMX root mode, typically triggered by sensitive instructions or exceptions.
VMX Root Mode
The mode where hypervisor/debugger software runs, with full hardware control.
VMX Non-Root Mode
The mode where VM guests run, under hypervisor restrictions and monitoring.
Understanding these terms is fundamental to grasping VT Debugger's working principles.
