Debugging Techniques Glossary

Debugging technique terms cover methods from basic to advanced.

S

Software Breakpoint

Breakpoint implemented by replacing the target instruction with INT 3 (0xCC). Most common but easily detected.

H

Hardware Breakpoint

Breakpoint using CPU debug registers (DR0-DR7). No code modification, harder to detect.

M

Memory Breakpoint

Breakpoint triggered by modifying page table attributes (read-only/no-access) when the target address is accessed.

C

Conditional Breakpoint

Breakpoint with a condition expression that only triggers when the condition is met.

S

Single Step (Step Into)

Executing one instruction at a time, including entering function calls. Implemented via Trap Flag.

S

Step Over

Executing one instruction without entering function calls, breaking after the function returns.

A

API Hook

Technique of replacing or intercepting API function entries to monitor or modify behavior.

D

DLL Injection

Technique of loading a custom DLL into a target process address space for code injection or extension.

C

Code Cave

Unused memory regions in executables that can be exploited for code injection.

Understanding these concepts helps in better using VT Debugger's features.
